As the Pennsylvania Medical Society has continued to look for ways to create value for the physicians in Pennsylvania, one of the messages we’ve heard is that smaller (defined as 1 to 10) physician-led practices don’t have access to the same economies of scale that are available to larger systems.

This is important, because data like this suggest that these smaller practices provide excellent levels of care to their patients. As the healthcare system continues to evolve, the expense of running a small business could put some of these excellent healthcare providers out of business. That’d be a shame for the docs, but it’d be a bigger shame for the patients they serve.
